Using Textbooks

The title of a textbook may indicate what the book is about. However, you can get more specific information by looking at the table of contents, the index, and the glossary. Understanding the different parts of a textbook can help you make use of all the things.

The Table of Contents

To find the major topics included in a textbook, turn to the table of contents in the front of the book. The table of contents often has large divisions called units, parts, or sections. Usually these are broken into subtopics called chapters.
The above table of contents shows us a part of a unit which contains chapters and the pages on which they begin.

The Glossary

The Glossary

The glossary is an alphabetical listing of some words used in the textbook that may be unfamiliar to reader. Each word is accompanied by a short definition. The glossary is found at the back of the book.

Example

yam (yam) n. 1 A kind of sweet potato. 2 The edible root of any of several vines growing mostly in warmer places.
The above section of glossary shows us two definitions of the word "yam".

The Index

The Index
If you cannot find a particular topic in the table of contents, turn to the back of the book and check the index. The index is an alphabetical listing of nearly all the topics covered in the textbook. One or more page numbers appear next to each topic. Look at this sample index.
